  • There is a large disconnect between the level of a hurricane inflicted coastal flooding and the 100-year floodplains that flood water insurance is based upon. During a hurricane, torrents of water can wash into a city’s business and residential sectors.

A slew of steps including structural as well as non structural solutions need to be taken to minimize the effects of a powerful storm. Higher and sturdier dikes would provide a structural barrier. Nonstructural approaches take advantage of natural features such as barrier islands and storm-surge storage in wetlands.
